"Hit Me Baby One More Time!"
17 years ago today (12th January 1999), the recognised album Baby One More Time by JIVE Records hit the US Top 100 charts and reached the top five in several countries. Including hitting number one in Canada and the United States. The album produced a controversial video and took newbie Britney Spears on a career path to stardom. What would of happened though if Spears did not get the opportunity to perform the well known pop song, as she was not first choice. Ouch!
Songwriter Max Martin and Swedish-Moroccan songwriter Rami Yacoub wrote the track and proposed for it to go to R&B trio TLC first. They rejected the track, but can you blame them? I cannot really picture the No Scrubs singers say "Hit Me Baby One More Time." The song was then approached to Backstreet Boys, I actually sort of wish I could of seen them perform the song. It would of been quite amusing and the video would of been something else...
So eventually Britney Spears took the opportunity to record the song, and well you know the rest.

The Baby One More Time music video is recognised for the memorable school girl costume Spears wore, which was actually Britney's idea. Director Nigel Dick had an idea for the video but it got rejected, following him to reach for his phone to Britney and she suggested
"Well, I think it should be about me in school and there be lots of hot boys around, and a load of dancing." The outfit then developed from the director suggesting Spears' wardrobe would just be jeans and T-shirts, Britney responded by holding up the outfits and saying
"Wouldn't I wear a schoolgirl outfit?" There you have it.
The Baby One More Time album was nominated for several awards including the American Music Award for Favourite Pop/Rock Album (2000), Juno Award for International Album of the Year (2000) and Billboard Music Album for Top Billboard 200 Album (1999). The song however won MTV Europe Music Award for Best Song (1999) and was also nominated for several categories at the MTV Video Music Awards. It was even nominated for a Grammy.
It just shows if you match the right lyrics with the right voice and the correct visual design you are on your way to stardom. So let us celebrate 17 years of the Baby One More Time album with the most famous and successful singles from the album, feel old yet?
Oh Baby, Baby...
