First a confession, as a guitar player I caught onto the hype surrounding Blake Mills through the usual channels. Americana is a broad genre, and this is reflected none more so than in the latest artist to emerge that has grabbed my attention: Blake Mills. However, Blake is no ordinary virtuoso; check out the previous link at about 09:30 onwards, he's a damn funky one too.
Blake's latest offering; 'Heigh Ho', released towards the end of last year, is a testament to the understated songwriting and playing he has at his fingertips. When everyone is screaming to be heard, why not whisper and let it come to you? That to me is how this album feels, melancholic and reflective with a little touch of 'well that's life,' thrown in. Touted as his breakthrough album, this may not be a breakthrough in the terms typically bandied about with that phrase, but I think that is the point.
As any music lover will tell you, you have to see it to believe it. So that is why we will be paying Blake a visit at Union Chapel in Feb.
Chris.
